Cost of transport

The cost of transport to access NHS services is usually met by the patient but transport to and from hospital may be partly or fully funded by the NHS in certain cases.

Am I eligible for help?

The NHS Choices website has lots of useful information about help with travel costs, including how to tell you if you are eligible for help with your transport costs to and from hospital or other NHS premises:

Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme

If you, or your partner, is on a low income, you may be able to claim a refund of the cost of travelling to hospital or other NHS premises for treatments or tests under the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme.

Treatment abroad

The regulations that govern the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme also cover travel expenses for NHS care arranged abroad. Find out more on the NHS Choices website.

For information on treatment abroad, you can also go to the Department of Health website and use the advanced search facility to look up NHS travel costs.
